Johnson County, Texas, conducts tax foreclosure sales to recover unpaid property taxes. These sales are typically held monthly and provide an opportunity for buyers to acquire properties at competitive prices. The tax sale process is managed by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the County Clerk’s Office.

Tax Sale Process

Auction Details:

Tax sales are held on the first Tuesday of every month between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Check out our auction Calendar for scheduled auctions.

The auction takes place on the courthouse steps at the Johnson County Historic Courthouse, located at 2 N. Main St., Cleburne, TX 76033.

Property Listings:

Johnson County lists auction properties in advance and makes them available for review on its website and at the courthouse. The County posts notices of the upcoming auction 21 days before the sale.

Bidding and Payment:

The highest bidder purchases the properties. Winning bidders must immediately pay, typically using certified funds or cash. The Sheriff or Constable issues a deed to the winning bidder upon receiving payment.

Redemption Period:

The original property owner retains the right of redemption, meaning they can reclaim the property by paying the owed taxes and fees within a specified period.

Important Considerations

As-Is Sales: The county sells properties “as-is” without providing any warranty regarding their condition or title. Buyers should conduct due diligence, including title searches and property inspections, before bidding.

Delinquent Tax Statement: Bidders may need to provide a statement from the Johnson County Tax Assessor-Collector confirming they do not owe any delinquent taxes in the county before participating in the sale.

How to Participate

  1. Research the Properties: Review the property list in advance to understand the available options and perform the necessary research.
  2. Attend the Auction: Show up at the Johnson County Historic Courthouse on the scheduled date to bid on properties.
  3. Pay for the Property: Win a property and promptly make the required payment to complete the transaction.
